Many of us are just now hearing the news of the passing of David Baker. The profound loss that is felt across the industry is a testament to the impact David has had.

David throughout his life was always the smartest person in the room. Not in a boastful or arrogant way, but you always wanted to hear what he thought. In the MarTech space, he was able to move beyond what today was and see farther down the road.

He would get you thinking so outside the box, that the box could not be seen. I remember one of the pivotal moments of my career working alongside Gretchen Schieman on a project for Skype. David was an advisor on the project and he would drop by to impart his wisdom from time to time. It was mind-blowing to see him in action and see how his mind worked and his advice changed my approach to my career. He opened my mind to the greater possibilities.

Throughout his career, David was known and beloved by everyone I met. He was spoken of in a kind of reverence and respect. From every corner of his career, he always knew someone and would connect people just so that they had a good conversation.

That’s not to say that sometimes David could be a bit harsh. To say he didn’t have a filter, was an understatement. But looking back, that lack of a filter was to help you bust through the noise to find the right path. I may not have liked what he said from time to time, but he was right.

For us, David was part of this business. He wrote some of our whitepapers and was a co-founder in RPE Origin’s predecessor Origin Email. We owe a lot to David for his leadership and friendship.

His mark on this industry is unparalleled and his effect on people’s lives was immense. He was a mentor, friend, confidant and shoulder for a great many of us. Through the years, I took great joy in our friendship, often talking about challenges and our business.

Even through his loss of his voice, he still was able to communicate the deep love he had for this industry and kept pushing us and me. Even in the whispers, David had a loud voice and presence.

It was a intense day when he would tell me he was proud of the job I had done here and in my career. To have that validation from David meant the world to me and I won’t soon forget his words, impact and the guidance he gave me.

There’s one less hero in the world today. No, he didn’t wear a cape, but damned if he didn’t have a superpower.

I wish I had one more call with him. David, you will be missed my dear friend.
